The Courageous Team
Courageous has a core group of 6 year-round staff members who keep our programs running and our fleet of about 70 boats shipshape. During the sailing season, we welcome about 100 more wonderful individuals to our staff, from instructors for both the Youth Programs and Adult Programs to front desk, dock, and extra maintenance hands.
We are very fortunate to have the following staff as part of our year-round team. Please click here for complete contact information.
Dave DiLorenzo - Executive Director
Dave started at Courageous in 2007 as the youth program race coach, before becoming the director of the Courageous adult program from 2007-2011. In that time, Dave oversaw the growth of our adult membership, instruction and racing programs, helping to establish Courageous as one of the leading nonprofit keelboat schools in Massachusetts. As our Executive Director, Dave now works closely with our Board of Directors and management team to ensure Courageous is meeting our mission and delivering the strongest and safest possible programs. Each Spring, Dave returns to his Courageous roots as coach for the Boston Latin School HS team. Dave learned to sail on the south shore of Long Island, and is a US Sailing Keelboat Instructor and Level 2 racing coach.
Kate Henderson - Director of Youth Programs
Kate is responsible for managing all of our need-blind youth progams. From after-school programs to our Summer Youth Program, Kate manages nearly 65 instructors and other staff to allow nearly 1,200 youth to sail with Courageous each year. Kate learned to sail on the South Shore in Cape Cod Mercuries and went on to sail in high school and college. She has worked at and managed numerous sailing programs in the area.
Jacob Denney - Director of Adult Programs
Jake grew up sailing dinghies in southern Mass, and after getting bit by the racing bug, went to to attend college at Tufts University, where he raced for four years. After graduating, Jake begin working as a college sailing coach for Bentley University and as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Jake comes to this role by way of his work in our frostbiting fleet, where he is the PRO.
Jen Bodde - Adult Program Education Coordinator
Jen's focus is on supporting the students and instructors in Courageous's adult program. She has been teaching at Courageous since 2009, serving as the Interim Adult Program Director in 2013, and is a longtime member of our Frostbiting racing fleet. Jen grew up sailing and racing Blue Jays, Lasers, and her father’s classic wooden boat in Long Island Sound, and managed a junior sailing program in New London, CT. She brings her experience as a classroom teacher and arts educator to her mission to provide lifelong learning opportunities to sailors at all levels. Instrumental in building the community of novice racers over the last few years, Jen is a firm believer in power of community sailing organizations to make sailing and racing accessible and welcoming to all.
Rebecca Inver - Youth Program Outreach Coordinator
Rebecca came to Courageous originally as their Environmental Education Coordinator. She now oversees our family, staff, and student engagement activities as well as the Instructor in Training (IIT), Summer Learning Project (SLP), and Swim, Science, Sail (SSS) programs. She also organizes our Cocktails for Courageous fundraising events and other development and nonprofit management projects. Rebecca is originally from Philadelphia but learned to sail on the Chesapeake Bay. She has sailed with Sea Education Association and Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean aboard the famous record-breaking circumnavigator, American Promise. She brings to our organization her experience working with nonprofits and her extensive marine biology and environmental education background.
Chris Roper - Assistant Fleet Manager
Chris is an English teacher of 30 years and comes from a family rich with sailors. He helps Dan with managing the fleet whilst keeping us up to date with our Yeats.
Hugh Freund - Marketing and Communications
Hugh began sailing and racing on Casco Bay in Maine at the age of 8. Intent on sailing throughout college, he chose to attend Roger Williams University where coach Amanda Callahan helped him land a spot on the 2009 US Sailing Team Alphagraphics. Hugh came to Courageous in the spring of 2012 as a keelboat instructor, but stayed on over the winter to rebuild the organization's website and help unify the brand elements. This season you'll probably encounter Hugh on the business end of a plethora of camera lenses as he steps into his new role in communications and marketing. When he is not beating the social media drums at Courageous, Hugh will be training in a Sonar for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.
