Summer Sailing Programs

Our summertime Youth Programs is based on a Five Step approach. Get a "Taste of Sailing" with Step One--its only the beginning! In a few years you might find yourself in Step Five as an instructor. You'll move through the steps from summer to summer, having more fun and learning more than you ever thought possible on your school vacation! Courageous' Five Step Program

  • Step One - A Taste of Sailing
    This half-day introductory program is a perfect outing for groups. For more information, please contact Kate Preissler at 617-242-3821 ext. 12 or via email kate@courageoussailing.org
    Introductory program for first time sailors.
       Learn how to steer your boat
       Tie the knot of the day
       Learn basic boating safety
       Go for a harbor eco-tour with your instructor
    Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 75 ft.

  • Step Two - Learn to Sail
    Classes last one week. There are two seesions each week, the a.m. runs from 9:30 to 12:00 and the p.m. session. runs from 1:00 to 3:30.
    This weeklong basic sailing program is great for beginner and intermediate sailors. In Step Two students sail with an instructor, and learn through land drills, water drills, and games. For more information, please see the summer youth program brochure. Note: New sailors do not need to take Step One in order to register for this class. Classes run Monday-Friday, unless otherwise noted.
       Within15 minutes you'll be steering a course through the harbor!
       Learn the finer points of tacking and jibing
       Practice man-overboard techniques
       Learn about the incredible marine ecosystem while catching lobsters and crabs off our pier
       Enjoy a fun regatta at the end of the week
    Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 75 ft.

  • Step Three - Advanced Sailing
    Classes last four weeks and run for eight weeks each summer.
    Advanced Sailing classes are only for experienced sailors who are comfortable sailing without an instructor in the boat. Please check prerequisites carefully before registering. If you are unsure about which class is appropriate for your child please call the office.

    Recreational Sailing Advance your sailing skills in this exciting class, designed specifically for the newly-advanced sailor.
        Through day-trips, games, and drills, this fun-filled class will help you learn to handle a boat by yourself and prepare you for the more advanced racing and cruising classes.
    Prerequisite: Previous participation in Step Three or by sailing test.

    Racing Learn to race competitively in our four week programs! You will be racing both 420s and Rhodes 19s.
        Train with our US Sailing certified staff - learn tons of starts, tips on tactics, teamwork strategies, and spinnaker clinics
       Attend lessons led by our world-class guest coaches
       Put your skills to the test as you compete against other top sailors from across the region at Courageous' R19 Junior National Championships.
    Prerequisite: Previous participation in Step Three

    Cruising Explore the world beyond the Harbor in our cruising program!
       Learn to navigate the Boston Harbor Islands, read charts, anchor, and other nautical skills
       Experience the freedom and excitement of navigating an island journey
       Anchor, secure your boat, and set up camp for a night under the stars
    Prerequisite: Previous participation in Step Three.

  • Step Four - Instructor-in-Training
    All Summer
    Accomplished sailors ages 14-17 have the opportunity to take on the responsibility and excitement of learning to teach while being trained to become skilled instructors in this intensive summer-long course.
        Develop leadership, presentation, and communication skills while spending the summer on the water
       Take overnight camping trips on our cruising boats to environmental habitats
       Develop teaching skills under the coaching of our lead instructors
       Learn how to apply your newfound knowledge in a marine classroom setting
    Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Step Three and by resume.

  • Step Five - Young Leaders
    All Summer
    Students who graduate to this level become Instructors and serve as role-models and mentors for children coming up through the program
       Continue your professional education throughout your tenure at Courageous
       Attend a variety of courses and clinics including the US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Course
       We'll also offer a variety of Courageous sailing seminars, and environmental training sessions.

  • Spring and Fall
    Expanding youth sailing beyond its traditional summertime boundaries, Courageous has a growing range of spring and fall offerings. We have spring and fall programs specifically tailored to the needs of local public schools, advanced after-school programs for our summer sailors who want a little extra practice, and programs for groups of first-time sailors who want a taste of what it feels like out on the water.
