- Courageous Sailing Center first opened its door on Bunker Hill Day, June 17th 1987 – with 10 boats, 200 kids and a lot of enthusiasm.
- Last year Courageous served more than 1,700 youth - from every neighborhood in Boston and 13 communities in the Greater Boston Area.
- Courageous has grown to a fleet of 57 boats - including 24 R19s, 8 J22s, 6 Club 420s, 5 Lasers and 2 Sonars.
- Courageous is the largest nonprofit youth sailing program in the nation with a 3:1 student to instructor ratio.
- Courageous is the only nonprofit sailing center in the country to be designated a Rhodes 19 Fleet.
- Notables who have sailed from Courageous: Mayor Menino, Senator Kennedy, Senator Kerry, Paul McCartney.
- To date, Courageous has taught over 10,000 children how to sail.
- Our Adult Sailing Program began in 1989.
- Courageous’ first satellite youth sailing center is located in Dorchester MA at UMASS/Boston campus.
- Courageous runs three Boston Public High School sailing programs.
- Courageous is the training site for the Special Olympics Massachusetts sailing team.
- Courageous, in partnership with the Carroll Center for the Blind, runs the oldest and largest blind sailing program in the United States.
- Courageous was awarded the 2001 US Sailing award for "Outstanding Outreach" in the sport of sailing.
- In 2001 Courageous implemented environmental components into every step of our youth enrichment programs - creating hundreds of environmental stewards for Boston Harbor.
- Three out of the last 6 years, children from Courageous have won the Rhodes 19 Junior Nationals. Many of them now coach the children at Courageous.
