Youth Programs

Courageous annually serves over 1,000 children, ages 8 to 18, out of three sailing venues in the City of Boston: Charlestown Navy Yard, Jamaica Pond, and Camp Harbor View. At our headquarters on Pier 4 in the Charlestown Navy Yard, we operate a "five-step" summertime sailing school program that takes students from "Learn-to-Sail" through "Instructor-in-Training" programs. Each Step in our curriculum includes sailing instruction, environmental education, and leadership training components. The Charlestown site also hosts two programs that provide free sailing and science programming to Boston Public School students. We operate similar though smaller-scale programs at both Jamaica Pond and Camp Harbor View.

We invite you to browse this site to find out more about our summertime and school-year offerings.

Getting Started

Never been sailing? Get ready for the ultimate adventure! In just one lesson you'll be out on the water. If you like it—which we're sure you will—before long you'll be skippering a boat, racing on a team, or cruising around the harbor islands. If you stick with it, one day you could even be a Courageous instructor!  While you're on the water, you're going to learn lots about the environment and get to practice some pretty important life skills, too. From fishing off our pier to overnight island camping trips, you'll be having fun on adventure after adventure, all year long!

How To Help

Get Involved

Everytime you come to Courageous you are doing your part to support our programs. Whether you are a long time member or you just came down with a friend to try racing one evening, 100% of the money we take in goes toward improving access to the water for our community. There are also a number of ways to directly support Courageous through volunteering, attending events, value-in-kind gifts and donations.

Ways to Give

It costs approximately $650 per week per child for Courageous Sailing to operate its summer youth program. Our summer program fees have been generously underwritten by donors including the City of Boston, the business community, charitable foundations, our adult student/members, and individual participants like yourselves.

Boat Donations

Your tax-deductible boat and/or equipment contribution will help support our Youth Programs, fleet improvements and other capital needs. For Equipment or Boat Donations, contact Dan Keenan for more info.

Volunteer

We welcome corporate and individual volunteers to join us serving the community. In Spring and Fall, the busiest times, volunteer parties will help maintain our fleet and boathouse. Throughout the whole year, volunteers can join us helping with events and other projects. You can also adopt a boat or serve as a guest coach. Contact Lindsey O’Connell, our volunteer coordinator, to learn about upcoming opportunities.
