Step 4: Advanced Sailing

Age 12 and up
Swim Requirement Must supply proof of ability to swim 75 feet and tread water for 90 seconds. Students may also be subject to on-site "swim-check" and "capsize recovery test." Download our Proof of Swimming Ability Form here.
Experience Requiment Open to Step 4 students from prior summers, those who have "graduated" from Step 3, and those who are new to Courageous but have gained equivalent sailing experience elsewhere.
Limits One 3-week session per child per summer

Course Description

Step 4 is an Advanced Sailing course offered to children ages 12 and up from throughout the Greater Boston Area. Each session of Step 4 lasts three weeks, and students frequently repeat this step for a number of summers. Step 4 students who choose to focus on dinghy sailing will learn to rig and sail RS Quests and 420s (both 2-person dingies), with an introduction to racing. Students who choose a sportboat/cruising focus will learn advanced sailing skills plus cruising and navigation basics aboard a 26-foot J/80, a fun, high-performance sportboat. Both groups will spend their third week together on J/22s, preparing for an overnight camping trip. In Step 3, sailors apply the skills mastered in Step 3 to take on more complex challenges, like competing in local regattas and cruising around the Boston Harbor Islands.
