Middle and High School Sailing: Fall

Courageous invites youth ages 12 and up to come to Pier 4 in Charlestown after school and learn new skills or keep old ones sharp. Three days a week, practices will take place in the Boston Harbor on keel boats (Rhodes 19s) and dinghies (420s) depending on the lesson and drills for that day as well as the students’ skill levels. Lessons might cover the basic rules of racing, advanced techniques to enhance performance, or cover basic (but important skills) like tacking and wind awareness. Though this program lays the most importance on practice and confidence with new and old skills, there will be at least one regatta for students to test themselves and experience what racing is all about. Previous sailing experience is not required, but all students must be able to demonstrate a minimum level of swimming competency. Registration is first-come, first-serve.

Sample Schedule:

3:30-3:45 Arrival and Preparation
3:45-4:00 Chalk Talk
4:00-4:15 Rigging
4:15-6:15 Sailing
6:15-6:30 Derigging
6:30 Dismissal*
*This will change to accommodate earlier sunsets.

Fall Sailing Registration will open in Summer 2025

High School Sailing: Spring

During the spring season, several competitive high school sailing teams train at Courageous Sailing as well as a beginner fleet of keel boats. Whether a school is putting together a team for the very first time or has an already established team that needs a new place to sail, Courageous has been able to come through for local schools and assist in providing necessary equipment and facilities. Practice schedules and structure are made at the discretion of the teams’ coaches with the agreement and coordination of Courageous Sailing.

Some high schools that have trained with Courageous include BB&N, Boston Latin, Concord Academy, and Boston Public Schools (district-wide team).
