Step 3: Intermediate Sailing
Step 3 is an Intermediate Sailing course offered to children ages 11 and up from the Greater Boston Area.
Description
During the three week session in Step 3, students master fundamental sailing skills as they begin to sail more independently in Rhodes 19s. While using the same stable keel boats as in Steps 1 and 2, the goal of Step 3 is to prepare students to rely on themselves and their peers as crew as they sail in the Boston Harbor. Though instructors will be nearby on a safety boat and jumping on and off the sailboats to individually instruct students, they will be encouraging and training their students to gain confidence in their own abilities and those of their crew while completing exercises and drills that are similar to what they have done before–in this case, often without the direct aid of an instructor. To complement their full day of sailing on the Rhodes, students will also participate in science classes, take a trip to Spectacle Island, and have the opportunity to practice capsizing on Quests.
