Summer Youth Program Instructors
We seek highly motivated, skilled sailing instructors and educators, those who will ensure that our students are safe, have fun, and have the optimal setting to grow and learn as blossoming sailors.

Cruising Instructor

Position Summary
Courageous Sailing, a 501(c)3 nonprofit engaged in sailing education for Boston youth and the community, seeks US Sailing certified Cruising Instructors to teach courses and private lessons, May 1st through October 31st. Most classes run on the weekends and weekday evenings. Hours are flexible and pay rates are to be commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
These include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
- Teach US Sailing Basic Cruising and Bareboat according to the curriculum as laid out by US Sailing and Courageous Sailing
- Provide a safe, positive and fun learning environment for students
- Be a knowledgeable ambassador for Courageous Sailing, Charlestown, Boston Harbor and the sport of sailing
- Exercise good judgement in challenging situations, both on and off the water
Benefits:
- Teaching sailing on Boston Harbor – not a bad way to spend your spare time
- Compensation: Starting at $25/hour for certified US Sailing-certified Cruising Instructors with USCG license.
- Free membership for instructors who commit to teaching at least 4 classes during the season. Check out our website for details, but this means free use of the fleet and access to all member racing, events, parties, etc.
- The chance to have a really good time, become a better sailor and better teacher, and be part of a great organization.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include:
- Captain’s License or “six-pack”
- Current First Aid/CPR certification
- US Sailing Basic Cruising Instructor or Bareboat Cruising Instructor certification
- Experience teaching sailing
- Positive and enthusiastic attitude
- Outstanding references
- A passion for grassroots sailing, cruising, the ocean and the environment
Other Considerations for this position:
- US Sailing certifications (Lifeguard, EMT, WFA, WFR, etc.)
- Additional teaching experience, especiallly outdoor or experiential education
- Previous experience cruising Massachusetts Bay and surrounding waters a plus
Keelboat Instructor

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include:
- US Sailing Level 1 or Keelboat Instructor Certification, equivalent or more advanced
- Current First Aid/CPR certification
- Passing sailing checkout with Head Cruising Coach or Sailing Director
- CSC motorboat qualified (mandatory in-house certification equivalent to completion of NASBLA-approved safety boat course through the MA Environmental Police and/or through the US Sailing Level I certification course)
- 1-2 years experience teaching sailing
- Exposure to basic sailboat and engine maintenance
- Must be available for occasional overnight cruises and island campouts
- Positive and enthusiastic attitude
- Self-starter with strong work ethic and attention to detail
- Team-oriented
- Outstanding references
- A passion for sailing, cruising, the ocean, the environment and working with youth
Other Considerations for this position:
- Other certifications (Lifeguard, EMT, WFA, WFR, etc.)
- Prior experience with out-of-school, outdoor, or experiential education
- Previous experience cruising Massachusetts Bay and surrounding waters a plus
- Camping experience
